Background and Purpose: In 2007 my breeding program was started anew. At the time this litter was bred I was basically starting over and figuring out which direction I was going. I wanted to work with Burmese, but had also always had a love for mink, and was somewhat interested in Russian blue. Aiko's father was a Burmese and her mother a Russian blue, so I had a possibility of getting both colors depending on who she was bred to. Mink was also in her background so I may have accomplished that goal as well. Overall her type was decent. She did have a long head, but she had good size for a female, with an attractive appearance, lovely ears and eyes, and a nice thick, round tail. Here temperament was wonderful. I chose a male I hoped would help improve her head while also maintaining the rest of her good traits. He was a Russian blue known to carry Siamese and mink. Based on known genetics, I expected black, Russian blue, and Siamese with a possibility of mink or Burmese. Instead I got a rainbow of colors, and later found out Aiko pretty much carried every color recessive known, and that the sire of this litter carried a number of other recessives as well. At the time I was not aware of the health in these rats' backgrounds, other than "pretty good". I knew and met Aiko's parents and grandparents, as well as some of Bobet's grandparents. I expected and intended to monitor my own litter's health over time and formulate or change my plans and goals as necessary.
