As a breeder, my number one goal is to breed healthier, longer-lived, friendlier rats. This goal cannot be accomplished in one or even a couple steps, but must be considered a long-term goal. No bloodline is ever free of defect. If such a bloodline ever did exist, the rats would live forever – because that ultimately is perfection. In reality, rats will continue to die from something. My goal as a breeder is to eliminate as many problems as possible. Ideally my animals will live long and die of “old age”. To better track these attempts I have created this page. On it you will find “foundation” animals (those I did not breed) listed with their health information, as well as litter individuals grouped with siblings. While I do register and update my rats with the North American Rat Registry (NARR), this page will be updated quicker and more regularly, while also providing all records in one easy-to-find location that does not require membership. When looking through these records remember that improvement is the goal and should be achieved over time. It can take a number of generations and years to fully evaluate a bloodline and see improvement. COD: old age. Developed tumor November 2008. Tumor removed May 27, 2009. Biopsy revealed it to be a benign fibroma, and not likely to be hereditary. Nymph made a remarkable recovery after her surgery. Two small tumors developed July 2009, I opted not to have them removed due to her age. I hope her offspring inherit her good health and vitality. Notes: Tomoko's only litter produced one surviving baby. Seven babies were born, five were stillborn, and one died during the first night. Tomoko showed no signs of illness during pregnancy, nor complications during birth so the deaths are a mystery. The one surviving baby was never bred due to these unknown factors. Tomoko is a full sister of RRLM Aiko.
